The Health Benefits of Algae Oil
Many people sing the praises of coconut oil in the culinary world, but Algae oil is the new kid on the block you might want to consider keeping in your cabinet.
"Algae oil is a nutrient-dense powerhouse due to its high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids,” says Shana Pantirer, RDN, a senior registered dietitian at F-Factor Nutrition 1. “These fatty acids are essential to our diets because our bodies cannot manufacture them,” she adds.
Some people may balk at the possibility of using algae in the kitchen because of the potential for a fish flavor. It seems that is not a concern, according to a holistic nutritionist and founder of Be Well by Kelly, Kelly LeVeque 2, "If I had to compare it, I would say that it tastes similar to vegetable oil."
One surprising benefit of algae oil is the presence of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid. Your body uses DHA for heart and brain health and other benefits. A recent study 3 from the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that capsules of algae oil contained just as much DHA as a serving of cooked salmon. Vegans can consider using algae oil as an option and people who are allergic to sea creatures or who avoid fish for any reason can make use of it. In addition, there is twice as much omega-3 in algae oil compared to Chia seeds, twice as much protein as spinach and nine times more fiber than Kale according to LeVeque.
Since there are so many benefits to using algae oil, it is now showing up as additions in many different products, including supplements, food, drinks, and even baby formula. Chefs will appreciate the high smoke point (485°F) because it makes it easier to use when cooking and reduces fat and calories.
“When algae is consumed as oil, the monounsaturated omega-3 rich fatty acids help stabilize blood sugar, balance hunger hormones and help your body fight inflammation,” says LeVeque.
A study published in the European Journal of Neuroscience 4 claims that oil with DHA may help to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety along with an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication.
There are also nutritional benefits beyond the DHA content. "Algae oil also contains marine minerals such as iodine, which is important for thyroid health, magnesium, potassium, and even calcium,” says Pantirer.
Sourced from Algae, NATURELO DHA softgels are a vegan and vegetarian-friendly way to get the health benefits of Omega-3 that your body needs to function and stay healthy.
