Natural Ways to Support Energy Levels

Natural Ways to Support Energy Levels

In a busy world, many of us are struggling with fatigue and lack of energy. The afternoon slump may hit you hard every day, or you might wake up feeling exhausted daily. You might be looking for natural ways to support your energy levels, beyond just caffeine or other stimulants. Luckily, many lifestyle changes can help improve energy.

Understanding Fatigue

The first step is to figure out why you are tired, there can be many reasons. And remember, it is normal to feel tired sometimes, we are not designed to have endless energy.

First, many lifestyle choices can contribute to fatigue. Some of these are:

  • Unbalanced diet

  • Nutritional deficiencies

  • Unmanaged stress

  • Certain medications

  • Too much or too little exercise

  • Dehydration

  • Not enough sleep

Medical conditions, such as anemia, can also make you tired. If you are chronically exhausted, consider speaking to your healthcare provider as a first step to rule out any underlying issues.

How to Boost Your Energy Naturally

Taking a look at the list above, are there any areas where you could make better choices to improve your energy?

A good place to start is by examining your diet. Here are a few diet-related questions that might help you figure out if your diet is zapping your energy:

  • Are you eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day?

  • Are you eating enough protein-rich foods?

  • Are you drinking too much caffeine?

  • Are you drinking enough water, at least 8 glasses per day?

  • Are you eating a balanced breakfast that includes carbohydrates, protein, and fat?

  • Are your meals balanced, to include carbohydrates, protein, and fat?

  • Are you skipping meals?

  • Are you drinking too much alcohol?

  • Are you taking a multivitamin or other recommended energy vitamins?

While a diet based on whole plant foods is a great way to support optimal energy, there are other lifestyle habits you can incorporate as well. The first way to have more energy is to improve sleep quality. This can mean working on sleep-related habits like going to bed every night and keeping your bedroom at the right temperature. Relaxation supplements, like magnesium, can help as well.

Next, take a look at your daily routine. Is your day overloaded with activities so you don’t have time to even breathe? Are you way too stressed that you can’t even wind down at night?

Constant worry and stress can tax your physical and mental energy. We need to relax. Regular relaxation and engaging in enjoyable activities help lower stress hormones that zap your energy.  Whether you find peace in a yoga class, exercise, meditation, journaling exercise, taking a nap, or drawing yourself a bath, make time to relax and unwind every day.

Finally, regular exercise is one of the best ways to boost energy and relieve stress. Make sure you are doing some type of physical activity you enjoy for at least 150 minutes per week or 30 minutes per day.
