A Healthier Memorial Day Weekend: Tips to Stay on Track

Memorial Day is considered the official kick-off to summer and if you’re anything like us, you’re probably ready for a bit of fun! With lots of yummy food on the menu, warm weather, and good times with friends, this 3-day weekend can be just the beginning of a memorable season.

If you’re on a health journey, you may be concerned that all of the food and festivities will derail your goals, but this doesn’t have to be the case. How do you stay healthy on Memorial Day weekend and keep the momentum going all summer? We’ve outlined five areas to focus on to make sure you enjoy your summer while honoring your well-being.

Focus on Fruits and Vegetables

One of the great things about summer is that there are so many delicious in-season fruits and veggies available. This is a great time to really beef up your intake because their flavor and freshness is on par.

For Memorial Day weekend, consider bringing a veggie plate or a fruit salad to your backyard BBQ. At any gathering, fill ½ your plate with produce which helps you effortlessly get essential nutrients and support a healthy weight.

To keep the momentum after the long weekend, aim for at least 5 servings per day of colorful, in-season produce all summer long. Check out some of the tips from one of our registered dietitians regarding how to boost your fruit and veggie intake.

Stay Active

Memorial Day is a great weekend to be more active with warmer weather and lots of outdoor options. Start your weekend with a hike, a jog around the block, or swim a few laps at the local pool. Aim to exercise at least 30 minutes each day of the weekend.

Even if you’re headed out of town for Memorial Day weekend, you can still get in some physical activity. Sightseeing, bike tours, or hitting the hotel gym are great ways to get in a little bit of exercise. Need more ideas? Here are some of our best tips for staying active on vacation.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated during Memorial Day weekend is incredibly important, as it’s easy to get involved in all the fun and forget to drink enough water. Before you begin your weekend, start your day with a green juice that can help provide a healthy dose of vitamins and electrolytes to set your body up for success. Our Raw Greens Superfood Powder is a simple way to make a hydrating green drink.

If you’re spending time outdoors, you likely need more than your normal 8 glasses per day. Try to drink at least 8 ounces every 15-20 minutes if you are outside in the heat and being physically active.1

If you’re consuming alcohol, you need to be even more cautious with staying hydrated. Consider alternating each alcoholic beverage with a glass of water to prevent dehydration.

Consider the Right Supplements

Supplements can help support your health goals during Memorial Day and beyond. A quality whole food multivitamin is a great place to start, but other supplements tailored to your goals and health concerns can help support a fun summer.
